My Recent Obsession

Hopefully no one can tell I like K-pop, not because i don't want anyone to know but rather i often get judged because of it. I love foreign languages and tend to be very nerdy when it comes to showing my knowledge of such. I took four years of Japanese and have been listening to Korean broadcast and music since my sophomore year in high school. Not many understand why I listen to music I can't understand, the reason is because i'm infatuated with the unknown. I love Asian culture from the food to the traditional knowledge, or the base of the history. K-pop, or Korean Pop is a big part if my life, I'll listen to a song, learn the lyrics, see if i like the message, and then i learn the words to the song. If you catch me off guard you might catch me singing in Korean. But overall I've been listening to it in my car windows down and music blaring. This is my recent obsession, yeah it's different but I enjoy it. If anyone wants to try and give it a listen I can recommend two songs. Give them a listen if you're willing and then judge it.

  1. I also understand the frustration with explaining that to people. Almost half of my music collection is in a different language (mostly Japanese). And people are put off by it. A lot of times when I like a song, it's not just revolving around the lyrics, but how the music itself sounds. It's always great to find a song I like in Japanese, build a relationship with it, and then look it up and realize there is a whole world of meaning that goes along with the lyrics. It just makes the music that much more powerful.

I love reading that you play it loud and proud too!

  2. I appreciate you sharing something like this. In my life i have judged people for their interest but now that i'm older, I understand that everybody is different and no one should feel judged for their interest. Especially in your case where you're constantly learning thanks to your interest. Keep blasting that K-pop!

  4. I love Asian food too :-) A foreign language definitely sounds exotic. But K-pop looks like Back Street Boys and other such bands just with a different language.

  6. I think its cool that you enjoy K-pop! It's the same for me, I like to listen to other cultural music even though I may not know the lyrics. But hey, if you enjoy it, why not continue on learning the lyrics!

  11. Sometimes I find out certain foreign songs are considered corny or whatever by their intended audience, but honestly if I like the song then there's nothing that can really change my mind about it haha

  13. I can relate to how music can just sound good even if it's in a language you don't understand. I listen to German and Icelandic music at times and they just sound good to my ears. Music is like a universal language that anyone can understand it, having been playing music for the past seven years.
